Here you are. The very last week. Week forty-two.

If you are still pregnant as you read this, then you have reached the absolute final stretch of this long, extraordinary road, and I want you to know something straight away. It is almost over. Truly. Whatever happens from here, your baby is about to arrive. This is the end of the road, mama, and the start of absolutely everything.

Welcome to week forty-two. Let me walk this last little way with you.

This really is the finish line

By now, you can hold on to one certain, wonderful fact. Your baby will be here very, very soon.

Almost no pregnancies carry on past this point. By forty-two weeks, you and your midwife or doctor will have a clear plan in place to make sure your baby arrives safely, whether that means waiting on the last little flicker of natural labour, or with the help of an induction already underway. Either way, the finish line is no longer somewhere off in the distance. You are standing right on it.

Within days, perhaps even hours, the bump you have carried all this time will become a warm, wriggling, crying, breathing baby in your arms. After everything, the waiting really is about to end.

You made it through the hardest part

Before anything else, I want to acknowledge you.

These last days and weeks, stretched past your due date, may well have been the very hardest of your entire pregnancy. The discomfort. The bone-deep impatience. The emotional waves, the not-knowing, perhaps a long and trying induction on top of it all. It asks so much of a woman, this final wait, far more than anyone really tells you.

And you have done it. You have carried your baby all the way to the very end, through every bit of it, right to this last threshold. Whatever this wait has taken out of you, look at what you have done. You are about to be rewarded with the very thing you have longed for above all else.

Your baby is nearly in your arms

And oh, what a thing it will be.

Very soon now, everything you have read about across these forty-two weeks will come alive all at once. That first thin, furious cry. The warm, impossible weight of your baby laid on your chest. The way they will turn toward your voice, breathe in your scent, and settle, because they already know you are home. Every single thing you have learned about your baby is about to stop being words on a screen and become a real little person, looking up at you.

Hold on to that. It is no longer a faraway dream. It is days, maybe hours, away.

How big is my baby at 42 weeks?

Your baby is fully grown and ready, much as they have been these past couple of weeks, perhaps with a touch more weight, long little nails, and skin that may be a bit dry or peeling, all completely normal for a baby who has taken their time.

Ripe, ready, and just about to make their grand entrance. The very last measurement before you finally get to weigh them in your own two arms.

From Courtney. If you have walked these forty-two weeks with me, all the way from that very first week when your baby was no more than a possibility, to now, with them about to arrive, then I have to tell you, it has been the great honour to be here for it. Look at everything you have done. You grew a heartbeat, a brain, ten fingers and ten toes, a whole entire person, from almost nothing, inside your own body. And you carried them, through the sickness and the wonder and the aching back and this last endless wait, all the way to the finish line. Whatever kind of birth you are about to have, however your baby comes, you have already done the most extraordinary thing a human body can do. So as you step over this threshold into motherhood, please carry this with you. You are strong enough. You are ready enough. You are already, exactly as you are, everything your baby needs. Now go and meet them, mama. I will be thinking of you. And I could not be prouder.

The one thing to do this week

This week, the only thing left to do is to let go, and let yourself be carried.

You have prepared, you have waited, you have done every bit of the hard work. There is nothing left to organise or control now. So lean fully on the people around you and the team caring for you. Accept every offer of help. Say what you need out loud. And as you go into these final hours, try to trust, in your body, in your baby, and most of all in yourself, that you can do this. Because you can.

The next time the world changes, your baby will be in your arms. Go gently, mama. You are almost home.

A final word, from me to you

And so we reach the end of our forty-two weeks together.

Thank you, truly, for letting me be part of this journey, week after week, wonder after wonder. It has been such a privilege to walk it beside you. But here is the lovely thing. This is not really an ending at all. It is the very first page of a brand new story, the one where you and your baby finally get to meet, and learn each other, and grow together.

And when you are there, in the thick of those first beautiful, bewildering newborn days, with all their feeds and cuddles and three in the morning questions, I will still be right here for you. When your baby arrives, simply switch over to the baby tracker in the Mama Years app. It keeps a gentle eye on feeds, nappies, and sleep, and grows right alongside you, offering the guidance and learning your baby needs exactly when they need it. The Mama Years was made for this whole journey, the one before birth, and every step of the one that comes after.

So go and meet your baby. Take it all in. And come and find me when you are ready, for the next chapter of your years as a mama. With so much love, Courtney.
